Olympus OM-4 Ti
The OM-4 was an update to the OM-2 and the OM-4 Ti took the update further by wrapping it in titanium.
The OM-4 and 4Ti, also introduced spot metering to the line. This allowed you to meter to a specific spot in the shot, especially helpful with slide film. Plus you could meter to multiple spots. The system also allows for identification of High Light and/or Shadow areas to give you better white and black production. Truly a sophisticated meter system. The controls display for the meter system is an elegant LED system that is viewed through the view finder and adjusts based on mode.
The cost for all this automation is obviously battery dependence. There is some discussion of the OM-3 and 4 being prone to battery drain but less so with the Ti versions. To be on the safe side I put mine on Bulb setting when in my bag or not in use and took the battery out when I was done.
My Take:
My OM-4 Ti is well used with the titanium proudly showing through. The inside of the camera is surprisingly clean. Makes me think it was carried more than it was shot.
Having previously shot the M-1, OM-1 and OM-3, I was familiar with the OM line but only the manual versions. The OM-4 is most like the OM-3 as far as the meter options that you have. But the OM-4 Ti gives you that added benefit of Auto exposure. In this case AUTO means aperture priority. You set the aperture and the camera will pick the shutter speed. With the added control of the spot meter system that lets you influence the process more.
I shot both AUTO and MANUAL but found that I preferred the AUTO mode. The display tells you what speed the camera is picking so you can adjust if you want. Most of the time I shoot in reasonable light and mostly care about depth of field than motion, so aperture priority fits.
Before I shot an Olympus OM, I did not think much of them and was not that excited to try one. Seemed like an undersized SLR without much to offer. I was wrong. They are undersized if compared to a Nikon F3 but so much better in the hand and nicer to carry. And especially with the OM-4 TI, there is no lacking options and capability. Plus the Zuiko lens are fantastic.
Yes, get one if you can. Especially if you can use the sophisticated spot meter system.
