Canon Model VT de luxe, 50mm 1.4
The Canon VT de luxe was produced in 1957 as an upgrade of the VT. Like the VT the VT de luxe has a trigger film advance. Only 3,475 units are reported to have been produced. Most were chrome but this gorgeous example is original black.
I have shot a few of the Canon rangefinder cameras now and they are all unique but all solid and so far all tanks. They are a joy to shoot. Not in a point and shoot kind of a way, but in a slow down and enjoy the process way. I would say they are between a Leica screw mount and a Leica M. They use the Leica screw mount format so all the L39 Leica glass fits but they are not as fussy as a Leica IIIf or IIIg.
My Take:
Get one to use the L39 lens that are out there both from Leica and others. (you could also do this with an adaptor ring on an M mount) But don't over look the Canon screw mount lens, they are great lens. I used the 50mm f1.4. For a lot less than a Leica IIIf, you can have an equal or better experience. A black one will cost but the Chrome one are much more reasonable. Remember the VT and VT de luxe are trigger advances if that is what you want. If you prefer a standard thumb crank there are even more Canon rangefinders to try.
